If we have a notion of simplicity and minimalism inherited from the 90s, we owe it largely to the impeccable work of Jil Sander. The house took its time to grow on fashion people, as it appeared in a time where maximalism and excess was, literally, in fashion. Heidemarie Jiline Sander launched her brand in the late 1960s, presenting a first runway show in Paris in 1975. For the fashion crowd of the time, this show lacked the excesses of the time’s fashion and show business.
However, as maximalist trends died out and luxury brands turn to more everyday wear for their proposals, Ms. Sander’s consistency became her trademark as the whole world of fashion broke down the way we experienced womenswear. The 90s savoured the naturality and ease of Jil Sander’s imagery, turning into some of the most iconic fashion campaigns to date.
In the present, Lucie and Luke Meier turned the label into another sacred space of each fashion season, where conceptualised simplicity turns into everyday wear combining art and modern sensitivity. Silhouettes adorn rather than cinch the woman’s body, and outfit structures are constructed in architectural and almost sculptural ways.
