Article: Loewe's Collaborations

Loewe's Collaborations

Jonathan Anderson celebrates eleven years at the helm of Loewe. Since his joining the team, the brand has transformed from a formal clothing label into a global cultural phenomenon. Part of this presence in the collective imagination has been its exclusive designs, such as the famous Loewe Puzzle bag, and also its collaborations with artists, galleries, and even film studios.

Recently, though almost sold out, we received the Loewe x Suna Fujita collaboration. The collection ticked all the boxes that make these brand capsules a sales success: a limited edition, translating the graphic codes of adorable animations and illustrations into Loewe's timeless and meticulous image. The collaboration featured items for the home, keychains, wallets, bags, and various clothing pieces.

Today, we're talking about other famous collaborations of Loewe, and capsule collections that solidify the brand as a global benchmark.

Loewe x Studio Ghibli

Between 2021 and 2023, Jonathan Anderson partnered with the renowned anime studio of Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli). The result was three capsule collections that have circled the globe.

Translated onto their famous bags like the Puzzle, Hammock, or Amazona, we found embroidered and printed characters from beloved stories like Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro, or Spirited Away.

The collections, completed in 2023 with the release of Howl's Moving Castle, touched the hearts of millions of fans of the represented stories. With a dedicated following for both brands, the collaboration ultimately strengthened the ties between high fashion and animation.

Loewe x SOTHEBY’S

In May 2021, Anderson wanted to pay tribute to his passion for ceramics and craftsmanship. That month marked the inauguration of Sotheby's renewed auction house on York Avenue in New York, featuring a display of clay pots decorated with astonishing details. These pots were inspired by the traditional chestnut roasters of Galicia, our homeland, which links this collaboration to our regional craftsmanship.

As part of a series of initiatives in support of craftsmanship, and as a private collector of it, Jonathan Anderson established the Loewe Craft Prize in 2016, recognizing the artistic talent of craftsmen from around the world.

His collaboration with Sotheby's was also a showcase of the talent of artisans close to the house. Using leftover materials from the house's collections, Loewe commissioned this work to ARKO (from Japan), Min Chen (from China), and Laia Arqueros (from Spain). After the exhibition, the vessels were available for sale in Loewe stores.

Loewe x Maruja Mallo

The Spanish surrealist painter was the inspiration for a range of dresses and accessories for women signed by Anderson. The creative director translated her series "Naturaleza Viva" into the house's pre-collection for 2023. Thus, we find dresses adorned with a variety of illustrations of marine life and flowers. As the primary female representative of the Generation of '27 in painting, her role was a direct or indirect message of hope to women creators throughout history.

Currently, we still have a Loewe Maruja Mallo dress with one of the artist's illustrations on an ochre background.
